Takeo Matsumoto, CEO & Managing General Partner

Dr. Matsumoto has over 25 years of extensive experience in biomedical products and markets development, R&D management, and international collaborations. Prior to founding bhp, he served in several managerial capacities at NOF Corporation in Tokyo and New York. He was responsible for the establishment, development, and implementation of strategic initiatives for the life science business. Dr. Matsumoto began his carrier in polymer chemistry, and he led R&D in the biomedical and healthcare field.

He was previously a visiting professor at Kagoshima University.

Toshihiro(Tony) Oguri, Partner, Director

Mr. Oguri has over 17 years of private equity, investment banking and corporate finance experience combined with over 8 years of experience in commerce and trade with Mitsui Co., Ltd. where he started his career.
Prior to joining bhp, he was CFO of Impress Corp, which was directly listed on the TSE 1st section in 2000. Before that, he was Senior Vice President of Orix Investment & Management Pte,Ltd. in Singapore and Executive Director of CEF New Asia Partner Ltd. in HongKong.
He is a Chartered Member of Analyst Association of Japan.

Yuichi Iwaki, Partner, Director

Dr. Iwaki has held three professorship at the University of Southern California School of Medicine in the Departments of Urology, Surgery and Pathology and has been the Director of the Transplantation Immunology and Immunogenetics Laboratory since 1992. He is also a visiting professor at the Nihon University, School of Medicine in Japan and at the University of California, Irvine, School of Medicine. He received both his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from the Sapporo Medical School in Sapporo, Japan.

He has been advising pharmaceutical companies and venture capital funds regarding research and investment strategies for over 20 years and is a board member of several biotechnology companies, including Avigen, Inc., MediciNova, Inc. and BioArray Solutions, Ltd.

Senior Associate

Kunio Shiba, Ph.D.,

Dr. Shiba has over 20 years of experience in drug discovery and development. Prior to joining bhp, he held senior positions at Sumitomo Chemical (Japan), Copernicus Gene Systems (US-based Gene therapy company, USA) and Corefront (Japan).

He has been a research management fellow at International Innovation Center, Kyoto University (Japan) since 2003 and a visiting professor at Center for Cooperative Research, Kanazawa University (Japan) since 2004.

He received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in chemistry from Tokyo University (Japan) and his Ph.D. in biochemistry and radiopharmaceutical chemistry from Kyoto University and his postdoctoral training at Case Western Reserve University (USA). He has published numerous scientific papers.

Hajime Okuyama, Ph. D.,

Dr. Okuyama started his carrier in pharmaceutical industry as a senior research scientist at Sumitomo pharmaceuticals, now Dainippon Sumitomo pharmaceuticals, one of a Japanese top 5 pharmaceutical company, and he joined DNAVEC, a government affiliated joint venture biotech company, focusing on gene therapy. Through the 7 years experiences in industry, he has acquired extensive knowledge in molecular biology, neurology, gene therapy, and lipid metabolism. Prior to joining bhp, he was with Life Science Management inc. where he was responsible for incubation of early stage biotech companies for 4 years.

He received his Ph. D. in pharmaceutical sciences from the University of Tokyo in 1995.

Nobuhiko Murai

Mr. Murai has over 10 years of experience in biotech industry. He has 8 years experiences as a research scientist in agbiotech industry at Japan Tobacco Inc. and Orynova K.K., a joint venture between Japan Tobacco Inc. and Zeneca Agrochemicals. Prior to joining bhp, he was engaged in technology evaluation, licensing, business development and alliances with global companies at Japan Tobacco Inc. for more than 4 years.

He received his B.Agr. and M.Agr. from Kyoto University (Japan), and his MBA in Technology Management from Waseda University (Japan).

Hiromichi Kimura

Dr.Kimura is presently Professor of the University of Tokyo, Pharmaco-Business Innovation Course, Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences. He is also the Founder and CEO of Life Science Management, Inc. Most recently, he was the CEO of HuBit Genomix, Inc.(2000-2002) and the CEO of Monsanto Japan, Inc. (1998-2000). Previous experience includes the CEO of Amersham Pharmacia Biotech Japan, Inc. (1989-1998) and a vice president at J.P. Morgan, Financial Advisory and Mergers & Acquisitions Division in Tokyo and New York (1986-1989). He also worked at Kyowa Hakko, Pharmaceutical Division (1979-1986). Dr. Kimura received a Ph.D. from the University of Tokyo in pharmaceutical sciences and biochemistry and an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

Kensuke Tomita

Mr. Tomita is the President and CEO of Oncotherapy Science K.K. Most recently, he was the founder and chairman of Anges K.K. (2000-2003). Previously he served for various pharmaceutical companies at senior management positions, Rhone-Poulenc Rorer Inc., Sandoz Yakuhin K.K. and Eli Lilly Japan K.K. (1987-2000). He also worked at Sankyo Co.,Ltd. (1974-1987)

Mr. Tomita received his B.A. in Department of Pharmaceuticals, the University of Tokyo.

Eugene Satoshi Takagi

Mr. Takagi is the founder, the president and CEO of Bio-Xcelerator. Most recently, he was the founder of Eugene Consulting Inc. (2000-2001) and the adviser to Bio Research Ireland (1997-1999). He also served for Schroder Venture(Japan) as a Life Science adviser.
Previously he worked at Grelan Pharmaceutical (1987-1997) where lastly he was the chairman & CEO of its Japanese operation (1994-1997). He also worked Fuji Xerox as a marketing, Product Manager for Color Copier Division (1979-1986).

Mr. Takagi received his B.A. in Department of Psychology, the University of Chiba.
